20th Anniversary // Berlin Wall

The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 marked the celebration of freedom and expression in Germany. One of the events being held to celebrate the 20th aniversary of this event is the restoration of the East Side Gallery – a 1.3km long section of the wall located along the bank of the Spree River- an open air memorial of visuals created by over 100 artists from around the world.

Although time, weather, pollution and vandals have taken their toll on the wall, almost 90 artists have worked to repaint and restore their original creations.

The artists “have conveyed a second time their genuine euphoria from 1990,” said Kani Alavi, head of the East Side Gallery Artists’ Association. “Twenty years after the fall of the wall, the East Side Gallery stands for democracy and human rights”.

It’s amazing to see these artists coming back to restore their mark for the second time, especially that their style has probably evolved since they last created it.
